Dear beautiful stressed out soul,

 

How long have you been feeling this way?

This exhausted, this jumping from task to task, pushing, struggling, striving?

How long have you felt like a failure, like nothing you do makes a difference, like you can't stop?

How tired you are from holding on so tightly to life, being oh-so vigilant and on edge and aware every moment of the day, for fear that the wheels will come off without you being there to guard them.

Even on the days that you do well, that you feel happy, that you feel content, it's still there, simmering under the surface.  The tension, the pressure.  The slight breathlessness.  The too-bright smile and the too-quick 'I'm fine!'.

For months, years now even, you've had one bright, brilliant day in the week, a couple of days of ok and then plunged back into the pit of struggle and worry.

 

Do you want to feel consistently calm, relaxed, sure?

I used to be you.

Once upon a time I would push and struggle and strive until the only moments of true calm I knew were the feeling of floating and falling when I passed out.  Not fell asleep.  Passed out.

I didn't know how to create that feeling, the space, that calm within me.  The only time it came naturally was when I had pushed so hard that my body would stop.  I would pass out on the train, or on the sofa after a long day at work.  Only then to sleep fitfully, wake up constantly, worrying, fretting, did I do this, did I forget that?

So, it wasn't without a bit of irony that, a few nights ago, when I couldn't yet sleep, this course popped fully formed in to my head.

That's called a download and when the download happens, you don't fight it.


How often has this happened to you?

  • You have finished work for the day, but you can't quite shake the feeling that there's something that you should be doing; you feel restless and slightly anxious, even when you check and double check your to-do list;
     
  • You run around all day at work trying to do the things, and jump from task to task to task without ever feeling like you're making progress;
     
  • You open your mouth to speak and you can't quite catch your breath.  It's like someone is squeezing your chest and stopping you getting enough air.

  • You used to really struggle with anxiety and although it's much better now, you still try to guard against adverse outcomes and put in way more time, energy and effort than the people around you, just to keep going.
     
  • You feel like more days than not are good, but when you have a bad day it is BAD.  You jump from bad thing to bad thing and feel like you're falling down a spiral of stress.
     
  • You are continually cycling through boom-bust.  You'll have a meltdown on the Tuesday, be great on the Wednesday, not want to get out of bed on Thursday.  You're so exhausted from just trying to keep up with where you are and what you're feeling.

 

No matter what, you have done so well to get this far.

 

I know that it hasn't been easy and you have already put in so much work to get here.
